Another gem I’ve just dug out. This artist’s proof by Leon Kossoff (born 1926) called ‘Father Asleep’ from 1983. Along with Auerbach, with whom he studied at St Martins under Bomberg, he remains one of the last of two living post-war British expressionist grandees. Predominantly known, like Auerbach, for his portraits, North London landscapes and impastoed application, his ‘immersive’ teaching ethos and powerful presence as a ‘guest’ tutor at St Martins in the late 1960’s is the stuff of legend. Further to recent correspondence with him, I am aware Leon is recovering from a bad fall and we wish him a full and speedy recovery.
