One of the interesting aspects of researching, interviewing and filming for the Liverpool section of the ‘Northern School Revisited’ project was the esteem and respect universally afforded to Peter Crabtree, who taught at the College of Art for many years through the 1960’s and ’70’s. Peter Davies talked of his bold and authoritative use of colour and Jake Attree spoke of the atmospheric beauty of his paintings but also of his modest reticence to court acclaim. Born in Morecambe in 1930, Crabtree studied at the Leeds College of Art and then the Royal College of Art under John Minton, Ruskin Spear and Carel Weight. He enjoyed solo shows with the Crane Gallery and Crane Kalman. Having today received this piece ‘Three Figures on a Beach’ back, having had it cleaned, framed and restored to its formative state, I really begin to get a feel for the emotive beauty of his work. Curiously reminiscent of some of Max Lieberman’s and more clearly Edvard Munch’s paintings from the early 20th Century, it has a serenity that bears witness to the esteem in which he is held.
