Auerbach is matched only by Leon Kossoff in his mastery of the impastoed application technique amongst the surviving post-war British expressionist painters, the two of them spawning a generation of followers and students who still ply their trade today. Mike Knowles and Jake Attree are two of the leading and most accomplished disciples following in Auerbach’s extensive wake, and the early 1970’s works of Richard Cook, from his 3 year period sharing a studio with Kossoff, are simply breathtaking. Kossoff walked in and announced one day “enough – you have to leave now, there’s only space for one genius in this room”.

Just been to see the Frank Auerbach exhibition at Tate Britain. I have never seen anything like it. I’ve seen his work from the 70s onwards, and been a huge fan, but I’ve never seen his work from the 1950s in the flesh. Astounding, utterly astounding. What you don’t get from a photo is the texture and sheer depth of paint, that creates as much a sculpture as a painting. Go, if there’s one public show you see this year, go. You have two weeks left.
