Client’s trip last night to ‘Painting the Modern Garden’ at the Royal Academy. I found it frustrating: a bit like watching Ronaldo, Messi, Cruyff, Zidane and Pele practicing 3 yard passes at the Nou Camp. Yes, Renoir’s works and Monet’s Giverny pieces were beautiful and the reuniting of the 3 lilies canvases that were separated by sale in the 1950’s was a triumph befitting the finale room. However, in my view, too many paintings were ‘fillers’ for the theme that reminded me of birthday cards that my grandmother used to send me, and whilst their works hinted at the avant-garde edge that made them the leaders that they were, seeing the likes of Manet, Munch, Klimt, Nolde, Caillebotte and Matisse restricted to floral pieces and garden scenes was just………………….nah!
