Client’s trip to the Abstract Expressionists blockbuster at the RA. Strangely underwhelmed. As America sought to establish its post-war aesthetic identity as part of the Cold War propaganda to promote democracy and freedom, somehow a lot of the works viewed retrospectively 60 years on, smack of the emperor’s new clothes. It’s impossible to now disassociate oneself from the myth and legend surrounding Jackson Pollock, unquestionably the star of the show, but without naming names some of the other rooms seem quite….bland.
