Dug this out of storage today as it compliments the tables which I bought a couple of years ago which were inspired and named after the painting above them. ‘Homage to the Square’ by Josef Albers from 1967. Albers was born in 1888 in Germany and taught furniture design whilst with Klee and Kandinsky at the Bauhaus. He emigrated to the USA along with many other artists amidst the pre war tensions and became head of the radical new Black Mountain College in Carolina (see earlier post). ‘Homage to the Square’ is a motif Albers returned to for many years as he continued his systematic exploration into colour relationships and structured composition. Albers died in 1976 and is one of the most influential artists of the 20th Century.
