In the summer of 2013 we visited Richard Weisbrod’s second wife Jose Christopherson, and Ronald Weisbrod, his son from his first marriage, in the hills outside Geneva. She was 99 years old and still as effervescent, charming and entertaining as her reputation led us to believe she was. Having experienced enormous critical and commercial success in the 1950’s and 1960’s, we had always been intrigued by the extent to which these two key players in the history of northern art, who entertained Lowry and the other leading lights of the post-war North Western artistic movement and who were at the fulcrum of the Mid Day Studios initiative, had simply vanished from the consciousness of the history of The Northern School. What unfurled was deeply moving, and having given our word that we would do our best to tell their story, here is as short a version as I could reasonably edit, to convey what Jose and Ronald would have wanted said. I am only too sorry that Jose passed away last autumn, before seeing her wish for the love of her life come to fruition. A longer version will be posted next week on our website.
