I’ve offered this piece by Richard Cook to the Tate for their permanent collection. They already hold two of his large works but don’t hold one from his period in the early 1970’s whilst sharing a studio with Leon Kossoff. This one is from 1973/4 and is the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead under construction. Having visited Auerbach’s retrospective at the Tate last year, this work would not have been out of place. The oil is an inch deep in places and it is of course an important aesthetic documentation of the naissance of one of London’s iconic landmarks. Ironically my son was born their too nearly 20 years ago.
