In early 2015, having visited numerous artists in the South West and seen a large array of terrific portfolios, there was one artist
that really drew me in: Richard Cook. A charming, modest, erudite, self-effacing and hugely intelligent man of great sensitivity: the type you warm to within moments of meeting. Having spent two days with him looking at many previously unseen works from his period sharing a studio for three years with his teacher and mentor at St. Martins, Leon Kossoff, in the early 1970’s, right through to the deeply moving and breathtakingly evocative land and seascapes of his adopted home around Newlyn from the last 30 years, it was immediately obvious that this was going to be one of the most ‘important’ acquisitions I had encountered by any definition of the word. His CV is first class and he is held worldwide including two large works in the Tate permanent collection, as well as the British Museum and institutions and collections worldwide. I am now releasing a tranche of works for which interest is already high, both for the early works and the more recent. he has influenced many current artists – I recall Ian Norris saying he had been a large influence on him, and Cook’s work is in turn reminiscent of some of the masters: JMW Turner being an obvious reference point. Herewith a selection of the first tranche: please e mail for further details or to arrange to view.
