Two large Arthur Ballard paintings we’ve just acquired: ‘Stone Shelters (1954), and ‘Non-Figurative Painting’ (1959). Ballard was the subject of an in-depth biography by Peter Davies, published in 1996. Ballard’s 1950’s progression into abstraction, mirroring the cutting edge abstract expressionism of Pollock, De Kooning and others from the New York School as well as Dieberkorn’s ‘Bay Area’ West Coast landscapes, typified the Liverpudlian avant-gardism that represented one of the differences between Manchester and Liverpool in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
