I’m often asked ‘what’s your favourite painting and who is your favourite artist?’ It’s nigh on impossible to answer – like favourite songs, poems, films, books et al. But if I was allowed one painting from history, value aside, it would be this: ‘Bishops’ (2004) by Patrick Caulfield. If interested in knowing more, this is a great article on the piece. In short: in my view no artist could capture the essence of melancholy, timelessness and mortality like Caulfield.
